This was the product of a media studies class at the Architectural Association in London. The Proximity Vest uses real-time data coupled with MELscripting in Maya to create new methods of visualization. This was a group project developed with Lara Lesmes of the AA and Carlos Fornos of PennDesign. This wearable device is embedded with proximity sensors and one "bendy" sensor. The objective is to record bodies moving in space as they interact with the person wearing the Vest. (Originally we thought it would be exciting to take it out and test it on the street, but after the Logan Airport incident with the MIT student, we decided that maybe it would be better not to get dragged away in a paddywagon/deported on bomb-scare charges.)
The Vest is made of lasercut plexiglass panels and uses a MAKE controller to feed the data from the sensors into a flash program that is then fed again into the Maya script.
